Armed Forces River Parade in San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas has been known as “Military City USA” for quite some time now, and it’s no surprise that the city honors our military members(past and present) by having this Annual Armed Forces River Parade in San Antonio on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M.

Armed Foreces River ParadeThere will be twenty-six decorated floats carrying all 5 branches of the service of military personnel ranging from enlisted men and women to high ranking officers. Patriotic music will be played from the floats and on the stage to serenade the floats throughout the two and half mile downtown area of the River Walk including the Amerson Theatre.

This year’s parade is being dedicated to the U.S.O. who has entertained the troops for 75 years. How well I remember the U.S.O. tour when Bob Hope came to Vietnam in 1969. Our service members truly enjoyed their entertainment at Long Binh.

Seven of the floats in the Armed Forces River Parade will depict seven decades of service through decor, costumes, and music. This is one of the largest parades held on the River Walk. It will be televised live in San Antonio on KMYS CW 35, and then replayed on WOAI and KABB around the 4th of July. It will also be syndicated into over 80 markets across the United States including the Pentagon Channel.

You may want to make a reservation at a River Walk restaurant or bar with a patio for prime viewing of the parade.  Enjoy a meal or cocktail during the event.  Many viewers just bring folding chairs and sit along the parade route. The parade is approximately 1 hour in length from when you see the first float, but you may want to get there an hour earlier to listen to the Tops in Blues Concert, and to secure a good spot.
